Last week we discussed the new effort from Beyonce which made waves in the internet over night, selling an astounding 80,000 units in just three hours. Apart from breaking an iTunes record, the album is well on its way to platinum, following the #newrules of her husband Jay Z. Bey surpassed her past record for first week sales, and it's possible that she'll maintain the #1 spot two weeks in a row-- a feat Jay Z accomplished with MCHG as well.

    R. Kelly has seen his share of controversy. After several accusations of sexual relations with minors (as well as a couple of lawsuits), Kells has been subject to a lot of media scrutiny. In a recent interview with the Guardian, the singer spoke about another controversial figure in the R&B world-- Chris Brown. Kells revealed that while he could empathize with Brown's demonization after his assault of then-girlfriend Rihanna, he never felt sorry for him.

    R. Kelly's latest oeuvre is due on December 10th, and to continue building anticipation, he's made snippets of the whole thing available two weeks ahead of time. We've already heard several of these tracks, but this'll give you an idea of the bigger picture.  The standard edition of the 13-track project includes guest features from 2 Chainz, Kelly Rowland, Ludacris and Young Jeezy (over production from DJ Mustard), and a deluxe edition is rumored to be in the works. The project is sexually charged, to say the least, which comes as no surprise from Kells.

The past week brought Christmas, which undoubtedly brought sales in all departments, music or otherwise. However not all hip-hop artists were lucky enough to benefit from this Christmas season. Although B.o.B released his album Underground Luxury just in time to enjoy some holiday giving, his album fell completely flat, managing to debut at #22 this week on the Billboard 200, moving only 35k. Compare this to Strange Clouds which did 76k, or better yet, his debut album which moved 84k opening week, and it looks like Bobby Ray's fan base is waning.

This week we welcome a new entry on Charts Don't Lie, Kid Ink. Kid Ink is a prime example of a rapper who took his internet fame way past the internet. The Alumni rapper is now signed to a major label, and was able to successfully release his debut album My Own Lane-- he actually surpassed the sales projections of 40-45k. Ink sold a respectable 50k, which isn't too shabby for an artist who is not quite mainstream yet, although it's only a matter of time until he gets there.

Hey, Hip-Hop heads, enthusiasts, casual observers, etc.; ever wonder about the great feuds betwixt R&B legends? If you weren’t, that might be due to the fact that there aren't very many. Kelly once said, "You don't want R&B singers to get into beef; leave that to the rappers."

Overall album sales are up this week by 20% according to Nielsen, and we may have Valentine's Day purchases to blame for this one. Perhaps lovers were picking up Drake's Nothing Was The Same, and some r'n'b albums for V-Day? Along with Drake seeing a rise in sales, so did Justin Timberlake, R. Kelly, Beyonce and John Legend-- those are all very Valentine's Day-worthy releases.
