5 Things You Should Know About TIDAL

So, this TIDAL “hi-fidelity music streaming” thing is actually happening. Not formally acquainted? Well, allow me to introduce you. A group of 16 mega-star musicians and/or musically-inclined entertainers united in a noble effort on Monday to launch a music streaming service that would give audiences music with CD-quality sound and videos, and other "exclusive" content the way artists like Jay-Z, Beyonce, Kanye West and Rihanna originally intended to...for a fee of $19.99 a month, of course.

Though only a few seconds long, Beyonce's latest vid with Blue Ivy is the best thing we've seen on Instagram in a long time. The clip shows Bey and baby Blue flossing, literally, with matching floss picks and matching stunna shades to boot. And during this priceless moment, a new song plays in the background--a beat that bumps along with a sample of a woman repeating "flossin"--and that certainly sounds like Daddy in the background with the ad-libs.

There was no way the announcement of TIDAL was going to go down without a surprise, but while plenty of people thought they had it figured out (an album drop from Rihanna or Kanye West), no one predicted the actual unveiling -- the huge cast of musicians who co-own the service.

While we didn't get any surprise releases, the TIDAL launch was not without its curveballs. They came out early as well, when the owner of the company was announced not just as Jay Z, but a huge collection of well known musicians from all different genres.Kanye, Beyoncé, Daft Punk, Jack White, Nicki Minaj, Madonna, Rihanna, Usher, Alicia Keys, J. Cole, and Win and Regine from Arcade Fire were among the many announced, and after arranging themselves in a line across the stage, the musicians each signed a contract with the company.

The latest single off Rihanna’s upcoming album, “Bitch Better Have My Money” has jacked anticipation up to another level. The track is a hit that has been making noise through social media posts, tweets and conversations since she dropped a snippet just last week. Although it's performed by the Barbadian pop princess, it's heavily inspired by the hip hop tracks we all know and love. Along with acts like Omarion, Trey Songz and Chris Brown, Rihanna's music has helped the smooth sound of R&B/Pop grow to incorporate a substantial hip hop edge.

If you're launching a brand new streaming service into a market already dominated by Spotify, having support from some of the world's biggest artists doesn't hurt. Thankfully, Jay Z has some friends in high places. At midnight, he launched TIDAL, a streaming service (formerly named Aspiro) that he acquired earlier this month, and had the support of Kanye West, Rihanna, Nicki Minaj and other powerful artists.

    40 Vs. Boi-1da

OVO Sound is a label founded by Drake, Noah "40" Shebib, and Oliver El-Khatib in 2012. The label consists of Drake and in-house producers 40, Boi-1da, T-Minus, Mike Zombie. PartyNextDoor, Majid Jordan, ILoveMakonnen and OB O'Brien are also affiliated with the crew. Today we're comparing 40 and Boi-1da. Not because we have to decide if one is better than the other, but because we're hip hop nerds who are always thinking critically about one of the dopest art forms to come out of America. Period.

As Drake said after he concluded his first interview with Nardwuar, a Canadian man who rocks a tartan hat and calls himself the "Human Serviette," "this guy is a legend." There's really no better way to put it: this guy's interviewed everyone from Nirvana to N*E*R*D, and always seems to unearth facts that no other interviewer in the game can. His earnest personality can throw some artists for a loop, but it doesn't take long to realize that despite the quirks, this man is one of the best in the business.

Isn't it crazy how some rappers just refuse to retire? Take Jay Z for example, he retired about a decade ago and that lasted all of no time at all. It's hard to put down something you truly love, and even though rap is a young man's sport, this list is dedicated to those who hardly age.

The Road To Jay Electronica's "Act II: Patents Of Nobility"
    Mar 6, 2015 at 07:37pm
Jay Electronica is now 38 years old. It's been nearly eight years since his first mixtape surfaced on the web, nearly five years since he signed with Roc Nation, and nearly four years since he claimed his debut album was finished. Album delays are commonplace these days, but four years? We heard a version of "Shiny Suit Theory" days after Jay E. signed with Hov; that was in November of 2010, and, as far as we know, a version of the track will still appear on the album.

Jay Electronica is a strange cat. The New Orleans-born MC now resides in London, where very few rappers decide to claim home. He's released music sporadically throughout his 11 year career, failing to deliver a long-awaited full-length project despite signing to Roc Nation MGMT and rapping alongside the likes of Kendrick Lamar, Big Sean and Jay Z.

Jay Z tends to avoid drama, whether it be baby mama drama or legal drama. Today though his name is in the news for both, at least, allegedly. In a new lawsuit targeting Jay Z, an alleged love child born 21 years ago is claiming that Hov has blocked his attempts to get a paternity test, in order to prove that the music mogul is his father. The alleged son, Rymir Satterthwaite, claims that his mom hooked up with Jay two decades ago, before the fame (and Beyonce).

This was hard. This was really hard. Mostly because we love all of Kanye West's albums. They've each played a unique role in the progression of hip-hop (and music in general), each pushing the boundaries of his sound and offering something new to the table.
