The Top 20 Projects Of 2016 (So Far) Jul 1, 2016 at 02:22pm
In the midst of a year that was already challenging peoples' definitions of mixtapes, albums, and "free" projects, Chance The Rapper asked, "Am I the only n*gga who still cares about a mixtape?" On the surface, it made sense-- Chance is one of the few top-tier artists who've never sold a single copy of his internet-only projects-- but as his latest, Coloring Book, was released exclusively via a deal with Apple Music, both his independent claim and the definition of "mixtape" were subsequently scrutinized.

While Drake's VIEWS remains unmoved from the #1 spot (sorry YG), there were still a few switch-ups this week with hip hop albums on the Billboard 200. YG made his debut with Still Brazy at #6, a precocious new LP from the California gangster rapper. Fellow Cali native and mainstay, The Game, debuted at #25 with his soundtrack "Streets of Compton," which coincides with an A&E documentary of the same name.

YG's "Still Brazy" By The Numbers
YG's "Still Brazy" By The Numbers Jun 22, 2016 at 12:18pm
YG followed up an impressive debut album with an almost more impressive sophomore album. That alone is quite a feat. The rapper who replaces his c's with b's (and basically turned that into a thing, even for those without gang ties), stealthily avoided a sophomore slump with Still Brazy, and not only that, he showed us a more grown up side of himself-- he evolved. He evolved, yet he also turned the clock back, taking from bygone eras of West Coast rap through out Still Brazy.

Two years ago, My Krazy Life surprised everyone. It was a debut album made by someone whose biggest claim to fame was novelty club smash "Toot It And Boot It," but somehow, it had the scope and consistency of a select few L.A. classics-- The Chronic, Doggystyle, and more recently, good kid, m.A.A.d city.

There have been few debut albums over the past decade or so that have made a bigger impact than YG's My Krazy Life. The album transformed him from a purveyor of the "ratchet" club sound to a masterful storyteller and a recognizable heir to some of LA's all-time greats. With his new album, Still Brazy, he intends to become a West Coast icon. After his successful debut, YG's life didn't get much easier, which is reflected on Still Brazy, by far his darkest work yet.

We've been waiting two full years (plus a few months, or to be extremely precise, 832 days) for YG's sophomore effort. The West Coast rapper quickly rose to prominence with his debut My Krazy Life, after a string of gangster-rapper-solidifying mixtapes. 'Krazy' is an apt description of YG's life, although, by now, that shit's probably pretty average-- especially given everything that's happened since My Krazy Life-- thus 'krazy' is more so a descriptor for the benefit of the non-gang-affiliated listener.

Happy Memorial Day. The past week has been a wild one, what with the chaos at T.I.’s NYC show, Gucci Mane’s release from prison, and a new Kevin Gates tape. Summer’s officially here, so expect things to keep picking up in the rap game— we’ve got a ScHoolboy Q album, SremmLife 2, and a bunch of other heat on the way. On the top tracks side of things, there was quite a bit of turnover in our list this week, with only the bottom and top tracks from the last edition making return appearances.

This past week, we were finally able to take a deep breath and reflect on all of the major projects we've heard in the past month -- A$AP Ferg, Bankroll Mafia, Beyoncé, Drake, Skepta, Rittz, Chance The Rapper, and Post Malone have all dropped full-lengths in that relatively brief timespan. It would appear that the summer's first burst of high-profile albums has subsided, but as we await projects from Travi$ Scott, YG, ScHoolboy Q, and others, at least guys like The Underachievers and Casey Veggies have given us something new to chew on.

OVO Sound Radio returns this dreary Saturday spring evening for its 22nd installment. Tonight's episode will be hosted by Oliver El-Khatib. The main event is indisputably the premiere of YG's new single "Why You Always Hatin." Judging from YG's last few releases, and also the single's newly-revealed cover art, it's gonna be a good one.

YG Recently shared plans to release a new single on OVO Radio, and today, that track, "Why You Always Hatin," will make its debut on the show. In preparation for the drop, the Compton rapper has shared the artwork for the single on Instagram, which appears to show him getting a pedicure, with some cash stacked casually to his side. Of course, when you're living that carefree, you're bound to accumulate some haters, which we assume the single will be addressing.
