Top Tracks: April 11 - April 17
Is it just me, or have the past few weeks felt like the calm before the storm? After all of the TLOP hubbub died down (this is the first week in a long time that we haven't had a Kanye solo joint in our top ten list), we've had quite a lack of releases from rap's upper echelon. Teasers, singles, and release date announcements seem to keep flooding in, but this Friday, when A$AP Ferg releases Always Strive And Prosper, things will really get cooking.
Lil Wayne & 2 Chainz Can't Wait For You To Hear Their Havoc-Produced Track, "Bars"
On the first part of he and 2 Chainz' interview with Genius, Lil Wayne revealed that he was brought to tears when he first heard Chainz' verses on CollegeGrove opening track, "Dedication," and part two features some equally interesting anecdotes. After talking about how Tity's "I kiss ya lady, eat her pussy, then kiss the baby" bar on "Bounce" actually caused him to fall to the ground, Wayne spoke of an unrelease track called "Bars" that seems like it will continue in the rappin'-ass-rappin' tradition of "Bounce".
Lil Wayne Admits He Cried Upon Hearing 2 Chainz' "Dedication"
"Dedication," the opener on ColleGrove, is a solo 2 Chainz track, and it's a tribute to Lil Wayne, who would go on to feature on 8 of the album's remaining 11 songs. "If it wasn't for Wayne it wouldn't be / A lot of dudes in the game, including me," Chainz begins the song, before going on to detail his early experiences being around Wayne, who brought him into his circle with open arms and encouraged him to pursue his dreams.
Lil Wayne Doesn’t Think Anyone Is Trying To Be The Best Rapper Alive Anymore
Lil Wayne once called himself the “best rapper alive,” and with good reason. His output combined with the quality of his rhymes for a few years was unparalleled to this day. However, Lil Wayne doesn’t think anyone is even trying to reach that level of lyrical focus, let alone getting anywhere close to it.
Tidal To Host Exclusive Lil Wayne & 2 Chainz Concert This Week
Lil Wayne is a part-owner of Tidal, and in a few days, he will use the platform to provide a live stream of an exclusive "ColleGrove" concert in Atlanta, where he'll be joined by 2 Chainz. The concert goes down on Wednesday, March 30 at 9pm at the Tabernacle in Northwest Atlanta, and entry will only be granted to Tidal members.
Top Tracks: March 14 - 20
Last week was definitely dominated by SXSW, with most of the rap world seeming like they were down in Austin either to perform, kick it with some of their equals in the game, or announce mixtapes in creative ways.
Charts Don't Lie: March 16
With a couple of debuts in the top 5, it was a great week for hip-hop on the Billboard 200. Kendrick Lamar gets crowned with the No. 1 spot with his surprise album, untitled unmastered., a compilation of eight tracks that didn't quite fit onto To Pimp a Butterfly. Despite zero promotion, it's still the top-selling hip-hop album of 2016, though it didn't have to compete with the TIDAL-only release of The Life of Pablo.
Top Tracks: March 7 - March 13
After the excitement of new projects from Kevin Gates, Future, Young Thug, Kanye West, Kendrick Lamar, French Montana, and Lil Wayne & 2 Chainz, we seem to have hit a bit of a lull three months into 2016. Views From The 6 is (hopefully) in sight for April, and A$AP Ferg and ILoveMakonnen both should have new material out in the next few weeks, but March is definitely looking like a down month for hip hop's upper echelon.
Kendrick Lamar's "Untitled Unmastered" Goes No. 1
Kendrick Lamar's surprise compilation album untitled unmastered. tops this week's Billboard 200 chart. According to Nielsen Music, the album moved 178,000 equivalent album units (and 142,000 pure album sales) for the week ending March 10. With this week's top spot, Kendrick Lamar has earned two No. 1 albums in the past year, following To Pimp a Butterfly, released on March 15, 2015.
Review: 2 Chainz & Lil Wayne's "ColleGrove"
Of all of Lil Wayne's post-Hot Boys frequent collaborators, 2 Chainz was the best choice to tap for a joint album. Who else fits so effortlessly alongside him? Like Father Like Son is certainly an underrated relic of the past, but you'd be hard-pressed to convince anyone that Birdman could ever hang with Weezy lyrically, at any point in either of their careers.
2 Chainz Praises Bankroll Fresh, Calls Lil Wayne His "Favorite Rapper" On Wendy Williams
2 Chainz just dropped his collaborative album with Lil Wayne, Collegrove, last week, and today he stopped by Wendy Williams show to talk about the project, the definition of trap music, and of course, the heartbreaking passing of his friend and Street Execs associate, Bankroll Fresh.
10 Tracks To Celebrate Bankroll Fresh's Legacy
This past weekend, the rap world suffered yet another senseless tragedy with the murder of Bankroll Fresh. Hopefully the frequency of the loathsome killings of promising young talents will not dilute the legacy of any one of hip-hop's fallen stars. In this case, the world lost a rare talent from the fiercely competitive city of Atlanta, right at the time when his movement was taking shape -- when he was set to experience a level of success he couldn't have dreamed of a few short years ago.
Top Tracks: February 29 - March 6
We got an extra day of February this year, and while there aren't quite as many brand new tracks on that week's top ten list as the one that preceded it, we still got over 50% turnover.
First-Week Sales Projections For Kendrick Lamar, 2 Chainz & Lil Wayne
We just reported on the first-week album sales for Macklemore & Ryan Lewis' This Unruly Mess I've Made, and we've now got the initial projections, courtesy of HDD, for the batch of albums that will hit next week's chart (for the week beginning on March 21).
Top 5 Verses On 2 Chainz & Lil Wayne's "ColleGrove"
Last night was a memorable one for hip-hop heads. Thanks to LeBron, TDE let loose a project of Kendrick Lamar album throwaways, which is sounding better than just about any album since the one they didn't make it onto. Hopefully untitled unmastered. didn't steal too much of the spotlight away from the album that came soon afterwards, a joint release between two legends -- the worlds of College Park and Hollygrove, both neighborhoods essential to the hip-hop landscape, joined together for a triumph the whole south can get behind.
Stream Lil Wayne & 2 Chainz' "Collegrove" Project
As if Kendrick Lamar’s surprise untitled unmastered project wasn’t enough for you, Lil Wayne & 2 Chainz’ new joint effort, Collegrove, was also just made available for purchase on iTunes as well.
2 Chainz & Lil Wayne's "ColleGrove" To Drop At Midnight
Kanye shared the album artwork yesterday, and today, 2 Chainz and Lil Wayne dropped the first single off their joint album, ColleGrove.
Kanye Tweets Album Art & Release Date For 2 Chainz & Lil Wayne's "ColleGrove"
Apparently Turbo Grafx 16 isn’t the only project Kanye West had in the works. He just tweeted a photo of 2 Chainz with Lil Wayne’s tattoos, and captioned it with, “New Project with 2 Chainz & Wayne dropping this Friday.”
Mannie Fresh Has Been Dropping Hints About Lil Wayne & 2 Chainz' "ColleGrove" Project
It's no secret that Mannie Fresh is partially responsible for some of Lil Wayne's most classic material, and from the looks of it, we should be getting some more collabs from the Cash Money all-stars in the near future.Wayne and 2 Chainz are getting ready to drop their own collaborative project, ColleGrove in the very near future, and looking at Fresh's Instagram, he seems to be involved in the project in some way or another.
Lil Wayne & 2 Chainz To Perform First Single Off "Collegrove" Next Week On Jimmy Fallon
A couple months ago, 2 Chainz gave fans something to get excited about when he announced that he’s working on a joint project with Lil Wayne called Collegrove, which obviously is a combination of both the rappers' hometowns of College Park, Atlanta & Hollygrove, New Orleans.
