Questions about possible guest appearances have already surfaced, with Akademiks suggesting Jay-Z needs more than famous friends.

The prospect of Jay-Z headlining the 2027 Super Bowl Halftime Show has already drawn criticism from DJ Akademiks, who isn't convinced the Hip Hop mogul can carry the performance without relying on his famous collaborators. His reaction follows new reporting that the Roc Nation founder has been selected for the coveted spot, putting him onstage at an event he's helped oversee since 2019.

On Tuesday (Oct. 20), Deadline reported that a music industry insider confirmed Jay-Z would headline Super Bowl LXI. The development adds weight to an earlier Puck report claiming the rapper selected himself after considering other possible performers, including Miley Cyrus and Justin Bieber. The NFL and Roc Nation have yet to make an official announcement.

Akademiks, however, took issue with the conversation surrounding the potential performance. Posting on X, the media personality suggested that much of the excitement was centered on which artists Jay-Z might invite rather than what he could deliver himself.

"U know you shouldn’t be performing at the superbowl that year when the only positive conversation about you possible headlining is 'WHO ELSE CAN U BRING OUT'," he wrote. "Sounds like some dj Khaled sh*t ngl."

The comparison to DJ Khaled was a pointed jab at the producer's reputation for assembling star-studded collaborations. Akademiks seemed to question whether Jay-Z's appeal as a halftime performer rests too heavily on the prospect of appearances from other major artists.

Jay-Z's Super Bowl Booking Raises Questions About Potential Guests

There is certainly no shortage of recognizable names associated with Jay-Z's catalog. Beyoncé, Rihanna, Alicia Keys, and Kanye West are among his many collaborators, and speculation about possible guest appearances has already accompanied reports of his selection. However, no additional performers have been confirmed.

Akademiks' criticism also overlooks the fact that Jay-Z has an extensive catalog of his own. Tracks like "99 Problems," "Hard Knock Life," "Big Pimpin'," and "Dirt Off Your Shoulder" are just a minute fraction of what Hov can deliver. Whether those records would make for a compelling halftime show is a matter of opinion, but the rapper's three decades of commercial success hardly leave him dependent on guest appearances to fill a setlist.

The reported booking is also particularly notable because of Jay-Z's position within the NFL's entertainment operations. Since entering a partnership with the league in 2019, his company, Roc Nation, has helped produce and select halftime performers. The arrangement has brought artists including Dr. Dre, Rihanna, Usher, Kendrick Lamar, and Bad Bunny to the Super Bowl stage.

Super Bowl LXI is scheduled for February 14, 2027, at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California. Jay-Z is also scheduled to perform at the venue on October 23 and 24, giving him an opportunity to address the reports directly. Those concerts could offer an early indication of what a Jay-Z-led halftime show might look like, making them two shows that will certainly be dissected.
