Adeel Shams, founder of CoolKicks, filed a lawsuit against Complex and Nice Kicks, alleging false claims about his business.

CoolKicks is going up against two of sneaker media's biggest names. The Los Angeles retailer and its owner, Adeel Shams, filed suit against Complex and Nice Kicks this week. They're asking a court to rule on claims of defamation, trade libel, and false light.

The complaint points to a Complex story from last year about the raid on the store. CoolKicks says the headline and framing suggested it sold fake sneakers. In their view, that's not true. They note that police never said the store was moving counterfeit product.

Nice Kicks is also named in the lawsuit. The suit says it posted a video online that linked the retailer to knockoffs as well. CoolKicks says the media has negatively impacted both its name and its sales. CoolKicks LA has also said that Complex turned down a request to take the story back.

Nothing has been proven yet, and we haven't found a public reply from either outlet. A store built on trusted authentication has a lot riding on this. It's also unusual to see sneaker media as the defendant.

CoolKicks Sues Complex And Nice Kicks

The background is last October's raid on the store. Coverage at the time said investigators were looking into stolen sneakers, rather than fakes. CoolKicks said it expected the truth to come out.

The retailer grew its audience through YouTube, where employees checked pairs for authenticity on camera. That reputation for spotting fakes is a big reason customers trusted it.

That's why the word counterfeit stings so much in this world. Resellers and buyers care about legit pairs above all else. One accusation can destroy a business quickly.

The three legal claims are different, but they share one core question. Were the statements untrue, and did they cause real harm?

For now, the case is in its early stages. We'll watch to see how Complex and Nice Kicks answer. Overall, the outcome could matter for how sneaker outlets cover retailers in the future.
