50 Cent has long had a shady and competitive business relationship with fellow hip-hop mogul Jay-Z, rooted in mutual respect but also a lot of criticism from time to time. During a recent chat with his Street Fighter costar Andrew Schulz for Interview Magazine, Fif threw some shots at Hov for the anniversary celebrations this year for Reasonable Doubt, which 50 thinks are making the album a bigger deal than it actually is.
But that wasn't all the G-Unit mogul said about his Roc Nation counterpart. The Jay-alluding conversation began during a discussion on first impressions, personality, power, and influence. "After they’ve been there for a while, you see who they actually are," he said of famous people who reach staggering heights. "And if not, we see the gimmicks. We see things like the Basquiat hair. When that comes, you go, “No, it was intentionally grown out for a Tiffany ad.'"
Curtis Jackson went on to reference touring companies having a strong relationship with the Brooklyn MC and focusing on Beyoncé's tour. Also, he mentioned Jay's "Home & Home" tour with Eminem in 2010, arguing this made Jay seem bigger than he actually was.
Then, 50 Cent made note of the Reasonable Doubt 30th anniversary celebrations, which also join endeavors to celebrate 25 years since The Blueprint. The first Hov album, though, is what took up 50's focus.
"Bro, the album showed up number 23 on the chart when it debuted," he argued. "It was not a f***ing big deal then. Why is it a big deal now? It’s great marketing."
50 Cent & Jay-Z Beef
Jay-Z's celebrations this year have included a lot of different ways to mark these milestones. Concerts, pop-ups, special vinyl editions... but nothing regarding potential new music. Fans are still hoping this is in the cards, but it seems like Fif won't be tuning in.
Most recently, 50 Cent's crossover with Jay-Z took a surprising turn when the former met lawyer Tony Buzbee. Buzbee is the attorney who represented an anonymous woman who accused Hov and Diddy of sexual assault. She recently fully recanted her allegations, while Jay and Buzbee continue to fight over defamation and extortion claims in court.
