Some 50 Cent fans think he could be sending shots at the likes of Jay-Z, while others believe he's misguided in his take on aging in hip-hop.

50 Cent was a recent guest on Apple Music's Rap Life Review, where he got into a heated debate over New York hip-hop's decline with Ebro. The broadcaster also asked him why his film and television endeavors are, for the most part, the only way in which fans are getting new music from him. In Fif's answer, he seemed to shade older rappers and proclaim he won't drop another album while explaining why being relevant at an older age is not viable in hip-hop.

"I'm not trying to be in the way," the G-Unit mogul expressed. "Hip-hop culture is connected to youth culture. You are not supposed to be the hottest in nothing at 60. F**k that, man... You can still sing, that's love music... I still got love for music. I'm never going to lose that. I'ma always want to do something. And those are like entries. It's me putting a little piece or tap something in there for them to hear that I still do it, that I still got it. I don't need [another album]... If it doesn’t sell, you keep it to your motherf***ing self. Motherf***er'll tell you, 'This is a personal album. I made this for this and that.' Then why do I hear it, b***h? Nah, man... Tie it to something and just let it go. I'll do something for [the Paid In Full movie]... I like Skilla Baby, DaBaby. A lot of new artists, I check them out... I'm not a critic..."

50 Cent's Jay-Z Comments

Some folks immediately took these comments as a jab at Jay-Z. While there's nothing explicit about the remarks that connects them to Hov, 50 Cent's past comments on Jay-Z have led fans to read between the lines. Jay turns 57 in December. Fif's been critical of him for years regarding business and relevance, although it's been mostly a pretty casual feud in the grand scheme of things.

Other folks reacted to this by bringing up the dominance artists like Drake have maintained for almost two decades. After them, not many young superstars have been able to fully reach those heights. So maybe the issue is more about breaking into mainstream superstardom today rather than older artists taking up space.

Elsewhere, 50 Cent is celebrating his extracurricular success and fending off trolls in the process. These could be just online casuals or longtime foes like Rick Ross.

Gabriel Bras Nevares is a staff writer for HotNewHipHop. He joined HNHH while completing his B.A. in Journalism & Mass Communication at The George Washington University in the summer of 2022. Born and raised in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Gabriel treasures the crossover between his native reggaetón and hip-hop news coverage, such as his review for Bad Bunny’s hometown concert in 2024. But more specifically, he digs for the deeper side of hip-hop conversations, whether that’s the “death” of the genre in 2023, the lyrical and parasocial intricacies of the Kendrick Lamar and Drake battle, or the many moving parts of the Young Thug and YSL RICO case. Beyond engaging and breaking news coverage, Gabriel makes the most out of his concert obsessions, reviewing and recapping festivals like Rolling Loud Miami and Camp Flog Gnaw. He’s also developed a strong editorial voice through album reviews, think-pieces, and interviews with some of the genre’s brightest upstarts and most enduring obscured gems like Homeboy Sandman, Bktherula, Bas, and Devin Malik.
