DJ Akademiks spoke to Adam22 of No Jumper about his influence and what he has heard about himself from record labels.

DJ Akademiks is famously someone who does not mince words. Over the years, he has angered a plethora of artists with the things he has said. Meek Mill and Lil Baby are just some of the artists he has upset. Vic Mensa and Shy Glizzy can also be added to that list.

While in Los Angeles for ComplexCon, DJ Akademiks was interviewed by none other than Adam22. It was during this conversation that Akademiks revealed the consequences of some of his comments over the years.

Namely, he believes some record labels are completely petrified of him. The commentator told Adam that labels see him as a kingmaker. Someone who could blow an artist up with a co-sign. In that same breath, he is someone who can derail an artist if he decides to get on their bad side.

DJ Akademiks On Record Labels

“They make it sound like I’m just snapping my fingers," Akademiks said. He cited comments from Lil Baby and Meek Mill, who have said that Akademiks' comments have led to missed opportunities and bags.

Meek famously stated that Akademiks put a stop to a $1 million budget that he had. Ak has even been told that labels are telling their artists not to beef with him. If they do, it can lead to serious backlash from fans, which then impacts how the label will want to promote the artist.

Adam22 noted that if he was told something like that, it would inflate his ego to a truly insane degree. “You can’t tell me that. That’s not a diss to me. You’re amplifying me when you tell me that," he said.

Needless to say, if you are a young artist, stay away from Akademiks. It could cost you that major label debut.
