Post Malone is one of the hottest rappers in the world right now, following the meteoric rise of his new single “Rockstar.” Getting an assist from 21 Savage, the track debuted all the way up at No. 2 on the latest Billboard Hot 100 ranking, vaulting over Taylor Swift’s “Look What You Made Me Do” and only being bested by rap’s other unstoppable song, Cardi B’s “Bodak Yellow.” To enhance that kind of success, Posty is actually doing his best to live and perform like a real rock star, covering a legendary punk song during a recent live show.

Strumming a bedazzled acoustic guitar, Post Malone gave fans a real treat during a September 16th gig at the Fillmore in Silver Spring, MD. He belted out the words to Green Day’s mid-1990’s hit “Basket Case,” which is off the band’s critically acclaimed album Dookie. The original song is played and sung at breakneck speed by Billie Joe Armstrong and the rest of the group, but the rapper slows down the tempo and comes up with a really effective alternate version, his vocals more soulful and slightly less angsty than Armstrong’s are on the 1994 cut.

Green Day’s lead singer actually took notice of the cover, which a fan had uploaded to YouTube, and have the rapper some props for his effort. “Hey this is pretty cool!” he proclaimed. While we’re pretty sure that Post Malone isn’t leaving rap music for a career in rock and roll anytime soon, there’s no denying that his singing ability adds a new dimension to a skill set that is already widely respected in the music community.

It’s not the first time that Posty has done something like this – in fact, he’s kind of becoming known for it. As we’ve already reported, he’s covered Nirvana in concert before, singing “All Apologies” to an equally receptive group of fans at another show. In addition to that, there are videos of him covering other classic rock songs before “White Iverson” made him a household name. However, if he’s ever planning on really becoming a rock star, he might want to work on his stage dive game.
