Uncle Luke speaks out.

Friday night [October 6] marked the filming of this year’s BET Hip-Hop Awards. As the top stars of the genre descended upon Miami for the annual ceremony, Uncle Luke of the city’s legendary 2 Live Crew was gifted with the I Am Hip Hop Award. While we won’t be able to view the fruits of this year’s show until Tuesday, October 10th, there has already been a bit of controversy surrounding Uncle Luke’s acceptance speech, with the spotlight landing on some reportedly questionable comments Luke made about Funkmaster Flex and DJ Red Alert.

Ahead of the show’s airing, the Southern Hip-Hop pioneer took to Instagram to clear up any confusion on what he said Saturday morning.

“Let me straighten out something before it gets to the point where hating bloggers take over and misinterpret something,” Luke began in the video. “My teleprompter went out – yes it did, like I said. So, I shot from the hip. And you know, when I shoot from the hip, some things come out, and people interpret some things where they misinterpret. Some people may have misinterpreted that I said something bad about Funkmaster Flex and Red Alert. No, those are my guys. What you should have heard was Funkmaster Flex broke my music in fucking New York. You should have heard Red Alert is my friend for life who gave me the name Uncle Luke along with Greg Street. I love those guys.”

The clip was also accompanied by a caption further touching on the subject.

“Let me set the record straight if anyone misinterpreted my speech at the BET Awards last night that I said something bad about @funkflex #djredAlert your FUCKING WORNG [sic],” he wrote. “What I was trying to say was when everybody else was shiting on me Funkmaster Flex broke my music in New York along with DJ Red Alert giving me my name I will always be grateful to those guys. If anyone knows me they know that I do not make Corrections with what I say I wear that shit on my shoulder.”

For now, the rest of us will have to wait until the show’s official airing to hear for ourselves what exactly went down during Luke’s speech.
