Nelson Mandela passed away this afternoon due to health complications, and celebrities have flooded Twitter as they remember a great leader.

As you may be aware by now, Nelson Mandela, one of the greatest leaders of our time, passed away this morning at the age of 95. South African President Jacob Zuma made the announcement via a television address today. "Our nation has lost its greatest son. Our people have lost a father. Although we knew that this day would come, nothing can diminish our sense of a profound and enduring loss," Zuma said. "His tireless struggle for freedom earned him the respect of the world. His humility, his compassion and his humanity earned him their love."

As soon as the news was heard, people around the world began to reflect on what a loss this is, with President Obama saying he "cannot fully imagine" his life without the example set by Mandela.

Nelson Mandela became South Africa's first black president in 1994, before which he spent 27 years behind bars for standing up against the system, and winning a Noble Peace Prize in 1993. In recent times Mandela fell ill, and was brought to the hospital frequently for a lung infection and other health issues. Zuma stated in his TV address that Mandela passed away from health complications today.

We can't do Mandela's legacy justice in this brief explanation, however the New York Times thoroughly encapsulates Mandela's life and successes which you can read here.
