SZA's Ctrl album was a breath of fresh air in terms of R&B releases when it arrrived on June 9th, 2017. The 14-track project reflects on confronting your ex and the trials of a hurtful affair. Although it debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 and was later certified Gold, SZA still finds herself feeling insecure about her project, no matter how much fans are with it.
“I just made a gang of songs over the course of four years. Heard ‘em all together and I was like, ‘Huh, alright,'" she tells FADER for her cover story. Without a doubt, some of the hottest singles are "Weekend," 'Love Galore," "Drew Barrymore" and "Supermodel" but SZA still never understood why people "fucked with it so much."
“I didn’t even fuck with my own album, so I was so confused and almost, like, angry that everyone fucked with it so much,” she explains to the publication. “It meant everything I felt about myself was wrong. And it was just like, If that’s not the truth, then what is the truth?”
She even recalls Childish Gambino A.K.A. Donald Glover shooting her a text about the success of the Travis Scott assisted beat, "Love Galore."
“I think when [that song] went platinum, Donald texted me like, ‘Do you still think it sucks?’ And I was like, ‘I dunno.,’” she says.
Speaking on the Solange directed video to "The Weekend" and the some of the criticism it received from fans saying it was 'too Solange' and didn't seem like SZA at all, the singer says at first she was upset. "...Cause I was like, Ugh this is my character. How can people think this about me?”
“I cared so little about that song,” she adds. “I made that song in two seconds. That was like a throwaway, and then it was like, What about that ‘Weekend’ thing?”
