Saturday Night Live had its Halloween episode last night (Saturday, October 31), with Inde Navarrette as the host and Gracie Abrams as the musical guest performer. In their Cold Open, James Austin Johnson as United States President Donald Trump interrupted the sketch and presented Trump's "new friend and future Press Secretary" Nicki Minaj, portrayed by SNL's Saidah Belo-Osagie. The roast took aim at her political campaign alignment with Trump, which has been ramping up rapidly over the past year.
"What's up, it's Nicki Minaj, I'm out here killing it. And by 'it,' I mean my career," Belo-Osagie joked. "I'm Nicki the Trumpie. I don't even know why you Democrats bother at this point. Give it up, it's me!" She then went on to imitate the Trinidadian superstar's animated "Super Bass" rap style before James Austin Johnson's Trump gagged and pushed her out of the frame.
Given how much backlash Nicki Minaj has faced for her controversial support of the MAGA establishment, and how much she doesn't seem to mind the hate, we doubt this spoof will get under her skin. But maybe there's a rant incoming, although she seems focused on other matters right now.
Nicki Minaj As Press Secretary?
For those unaware, this SNL skit refers to Nicki Minaj's possible future as White House Press Secretary. After multiple staffers and administration members floated the idea online, whether as a joke or just a light tease, the U.S. President himself seemed to like the idea.
"That's a good idea. I think I'll have to think about that," he expressed during a recent interview. "I'm going to think about that."
This followed Minaj's appearance at a Trump rally in Michigan and many other instances, whether in-person or online, of her waving the MAGA flag. Nicki Minaj now has political opponents as a result, as she's gone at various Democrats and enemies of the Republican Party, such as a recent tweet disparaging Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed.
Pop culture at large continues to express shock at Nicki's turn, so this Saturday Night Live spoof is no surprise. We'll see if things quell from this point forward.
