Jordan Brand is celebrating Día de Muertos again, and this year the Air Jordan 1 Low OG gets the spotlight. The pair is called "Somos Historias," which means "We Are Stories."
The release date is October 13th, and the price is MX$3,800. That is roughly $200. For now, it is only confirmed for Mexico.
Overall, the design is earthy and detailed. Brown suede covers the shoe, and shaggy suede sits around the heel and eyestays. Black leather and textured overlays add contrast.
Teal works as the accent color. It appears on the trim, the midsole, and a small Swoosh near the toe. The main Swoosh on the side is woven instead of leather.
The story behind the shoe is just as interesting. A Xoloitzcuintli, a Mexican dog breed, appears on the back of the tongue. In Mexican tradition, the dog guides souls on their journey.
Each pair is numbered on a tag inside the tongue. Reports say about 5,000 pairs exist, so this is a very limited run. The box also gets special treatment, with a concrete-style print and a large Wings logo.
It is a nice detail for a time that is all about remembering loved ones. Fans outside Mexico may need to hunt for pairs on the resale market.
Air Jordan 1 Low OG “Día de Muertos”
This is not the first time Jordan Brand has honored Mexican culture. Last year, the brand released the Air Jordan 4 "Somos Eternos" for Día de Muertos.
Jordan Brand has also done Mexico-focused pairs for Independence Day. Those include the Air Jordan 5 "El Grito" and the Air Jordan 3 "El Vuelo."
A bigger "Somos Historias" collection is also on the way, with an Air Jordan 1 Mid and apparel. The Mid should be easier to find than the Low.
The Air Jordan 1 Low is a smart canvas for this kind of story. The low cut leaves plenty of room for stitching, color, and small details. It is also easy to wear.
