Review: Freddie Gibbs & Madlib's "Piñata"

On paper, stone cold gangster Freddie Gibbs and alt-hop producer Madlib have little in common. But after releasing several highly enjoyable EPs beginning in 2011, it quickly became apparent that the duo were capable of vibing off one another. Four songs from those EPs show up on Piñata, and the rest of its seventeen songs fall in line with their smoked-out, sample-heavy sound, creating an insanely consistent album. Piñata is Madlib's best collaborative album since cult classic Madvillainy, and it might be Gibbs' best work yet.

When hip-hop began, samples were all that DJs and producers had to construct instrumental tracks with. They'd dig through crates of vinyl trying to find isolated drum breaks, melodies or vocals that they could repurpose for use in hip-hop music. Today, sampling has become less common, but a choice sample can still push a track from lukewarm to hot faster than you can say "uh huh honey."  This week, see who Curren$y, Mobb Deep, Freddie Gibbs and Isaiah Rashad chose to sample in their recent releases, all of which you can find on HNHH.

This past week proved to be a big one for hip-hop. Definitely a week to be remembered, with three big rap albums (and one r'n'b album) all dropping on the same day (and every one knows this date by now)-- June 18. While Kanye West, J. Cole and Mac Miller had the spotlight for the majority of the week, that's not to say there weren't some dope releases from other artists. This week in Underrated Audio we look over some ill drops from the likes of Dom Kennedy, Deniro Farrar, Flatbush Zombies, Freddie Gibbs, among others.

The month of April is already wrapping up, even though it seems like it just arrived. We celebrated 4/20 over the weekend, which saw an influx of weed-smoking songs on the site, as expected. Nonetheless, we like think that you can make every day a 4/20, especially when you have the right music. This week UA has four perfect tracks to do so. You can start with the smooth and chilled out "Make A Mill" before going into Rockie Fresh's "Rollin" which is still a bit low-key, and then we've got some harder, more intricate tracks from Freddie Gibbs and the like.
