Eminem New Zealand Lawsuit Tackled By John Oliver

In last weekend's episode of Last Week Tonight, John Oliver returned to the ongoing story of the copyright lawsuit between Eminem's publishers and a political party in New Zealand. Let's just say he didn't hold back. The first time Oliver tackled the subject was almost three years ago, goofing on the Kiwi pronunciation of "Eminem" in particular, and with the trial playing out this week, Oliver updated his viewers on what he called "[...] the lamest rap beef since Lil Wayne's five-year feud with William H. Macy." Joking aside, the odd truth about the trial is that the National Party didn't actually use "Lose Yourself" without permission in one of their campaign ads - they chose instead to use a similar-sounding track titled "Eminem-esque." Referencing "Blurred Lines" as another such culprit, Oliver leaned into the members of the National Party, saying "If you are going to rip off someone else's work, maybe don't include the name of the person you're ripping off." The trial continued yesterday, with a musicologist playing a medley of songs for the courtroom, including songs from Bruno Mars, Justin Bieber and even "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star."
