The 2021 murder of Drakeo The Ruler continues to be a controversial hip-hop case, for which his family continues to seek justice. According to a Patch report from City News Service in Los Angeles, a judge recently set a minor bump in the road for the family's wrongful death lawsuit against Live Nation Worldwide Inc., C3 Presents LLC, and others. Drakeo passed away after assailants stabbed him backstage at the Once Upon A Time In LA festival.
L.A. Superior Court Judge James I. Montgomery reportedly ruled on Thursday (September 24) that the production companies will not have to disclose their financial conditions before trial. Judge Montgomery did not validate complaints from The Ruler's estate and his mother Darrylene Corniel, who argued they should have that access to assess punitive damages.
"Plaintiff contends that it has shown a substantial probability that the estate will prevail on a claim for punitive damages by a finding of malice and oppression," the judge reportedly wrote in the five-page ruling. "However, the court is not persuaded by plaintiff's argument." Defense attorneys for Live Nation and the other defendants reportedly argued the estate is presenting a "premises-security negligence case dressed up as intentional wrongdoing. It is not the base, vile, and contemptible conduct undertaken with actual knowledge of probable catastrophic consequences that the punitive-damages statute demands."
Live Nation and C3's lawyers claimed the undisputed record shows good-faith safety commitment that coordinated with various entities and law enforcement agencies. They also claim the fight that killed Drakeo The Ruler was his responsibility, not their clients'.
Drakeo The Ruler Lawsuit
The trial over this wrongful death lawsuit will reportedly begin on November 30, if everything goes according to the current schedule. Drakeo's family may have emerged unsuccessful with this recent development, but that is far from a loss overall. They will continue to pursue access to information in future proceedings ahead of the trial.
Bobby Dee Presents Inc., Jeff Shuman, and USC are also defendants in this case. The Ruler's estate seeks accountability for organizers and security teams while the criminal organization continues.
Rumors around Drakeo The Ruler's case have recently involved YG and Drake. This emerged due to the former's detainment earlier this year, and the West Coast rapper seemed to cosign theories that Drizzy is contributing to the investigation.
