From one Playboi to another.
Since the passing of publishing magnate and Bunny employer Hugh Hefner last week, tributes and stories about the icon have been rolling in from all corners of popular culture. Today, (October 2nd), an appropriately named member of the hip-hop community is taking things a step further and giving Hefner the send-off he deserves, teasing a potential upcoming track with a short video clip.
Playboi Carti, who was among the artists who took some time out and paid his respects to the fallen Playboy head honcho on Twitter, shared a brief snippet of what looks to be a musical tribute to the legend. In the tweet seen above, he mentions that he's produced the work himself, so whether it's a song or another kind of media-based homage, Carti's fingerprints are all over this one. Only 39 seconds in length, it doesn't give a super clear indication as to what the content will be, but if you listen closely, you can make out the voices of both Carti and Lil Uzi Vert talking over the beat instead of rapping. The visual is a spliced-together combination of footage of the rapper and Hefner, all shrouded in a now-ubiquitous 90's-style retro filter. The obsession with making everything look like a bad VHS bootleg is real.
This may not be the only new music project that Playboi Carti has cooking up for his fans. Not long ago, he and Lil Uzi Vert teased the possibility of them releasing a collaborative mixtape. There's still no official word as to when and if that's happening, but between that and this new Playboy-themed snippet, a deluge of new material from the young rapper could be closer than we think. Carti is also set to be one of the performers at his year's BET Hip-Hop Awards, which goes down on October 6th in Miami, FL. Other performers include Migos, Rick Ross and Yo Gotti. DJ Khaled is also set to reprise his duties as host for the telecast.
