Kendrick Lamar has undoubtedly been a prominent figure out of Compton since his debut album, Good Kid M.A.A.D City, dropped back in 2013 if not earlier. He's emphasized giving back to his community in any way that he can and was also delivering guests verse for people within his city. One of the rappers that he was working with earlier on at that point was YG Hootie. Shortly after the release of Kendrick's major label debut, both YG Hootie and Kendrick Lamar connected on "Two Presidents." Today, they re-connect after a few years on "The City."
"The City" is a dedication to the city of Compton. A city that does get a bad rep at times but people often forget that it was once a place called home for both George Bush Sr. and Jr. Today, Kendrick Lamar and YG Hootie had to remind everyone of the fact. The cover art features former president George W. Bush Jr. as a child in Compton.
The two rappers connect to show love to the city that have showed them unconditional love. Kendrick Lamar comes through with an outstanding verse, as to be expected. While Kendrick's been on another tier of stardom over the course of 2017, he connects deeper with his Compton roots on this record. The song was produced by DJ FU of Mike Will Made It's EarDrummer camp. The production features reversed synths that are carried by the heavy percussion. YG Hootie and Kendrick Lamar have previously proved to have great chemistry on wax together and this a testament to that.
YG Hootie has remained relatively quiet for the most part. Considering that he just dropped a big tune with one of the biggest rappers in the world, hopefully we'll get some more fire from him very soon.
