Woody Allen has spent the last two decades battling sexual assault allegations from his stepdaughter Dylan Farrow. An investigation in 1993 ended with authorities claiming that Farrow was not sexually assaulted by Allen as a child, although Farrow wrote an op-ed for the Los Angeles Times last year that reignited the scandal. Now, Allen's wife Soon-Yi Previn is speaking out against Farrow.
This is where things get complicated though. Previn was the adopted daughter of Mia Farrow and her then-husband Andre Previn in 1978. Mia began dating Allen in the early 90's, but Allen began a romantic relationship with Mia's child Previn soon after. Around the same time, Mia's other child Dylan claimed that Allen had sexually assaulted her as a child. Allen was secretly dating one young woman, while being accused of assaulting another young woman, both of which shared the same mother. Mia and Allen separated, and Allen married her daughter Previn in 1997.
Previn was approached by Daphne Merkin of New York Magazine, and she defended her husband against the reignited sexual assault claims brought about by her sister Dylan. In the piece, Merkin speaks with both Allen and Previn. “People think that I was Soon-Yi’s father, that I raped and married my underaged, retarded daughter," stated Allen. Soon-Yi continued on to chronicle her life with her mother Mia, describing their relationship as “oil and water." Previn reveals that her mother was abusive, a story corroborated by her brother Moses. She also stands up for Allen against her sister Dylan, claiming that their mother Mia pit her child against her former lover. “But what’s happened to Woody is so upsetting, so unjust," Previn stated. "[Mia] has taken advantage of the #MeToo movement and paraded Dylan as a victim. And a whole new generation is hearing about it when they shouldn’t.” Dylan took to Twitter to respond to the article, reasserting her story that she was abused by Allen.
