Amidst all of the uproar from Kanye West's controversial open admiration for Donald Trump, it seemed like everybody had an opinion on the matter, whether they agreed with him or not. One artist who unexpectedly stepped up to defend Kanye was Chance The Rapper, who is also from the city of Chicago, and has worked with Kanye extensively.
Chance went on Twitter to say that he had spoken to Kanye, and that he was the same Kanye from the telethon. He also made a second tweet which was the cause of most of this controversy, reading, "Black people don't have to be democrats."
Chance instantly received a huge backlash from the public, for giving a pass to Kanye's behavior. Even worse, President Trump himself shouted out Chance in a tweet today, making it seem as though they were in agreement.
Today, Chance issued an apology for his statements, and further explained the context of why he said what he said. He admits that he only wanted to defend Kanye because they're "family," and that he didn't want to be used as a tool.
"I didn't speak up because I agree with what Kanye had to say or cause I fuck with trump," said Chance. "I did it because I wanted to help my friend and cause I felt like I was being used to attack him."
He goes on to say that, while the issues facing Chicago are real, it was the wrong time to bring it up. He also says that he shouldn't have taken his defense of Kanye online, and hope that his apology will reflect through his future actions.
