H.E.R.'s latest drop busts through with a fierce opening track entitled "Lost Souls." Those who know the artist's musical references will be hit with the song's familiarity right away. The songstress flipped a classic by one of her own musical icons. Lauryn Hill's "Lost Ones" is a direct inspiration for this project's introductory track.
The production harnesses similar drum patterns, record scratch samples and overall harmony from the 1998 classic from The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. The lyrical flow borrows from Hill as much as the theme is cut from the same socio-cultural concerns she rapped about. Both songs deal with feminism, the concept of the material vis-a-vis the spiritual as well as the cultural definition of success and the downfall one finds when chasing its mainstream definition. Of course, Ms. Hill is credited on the Dj Scratch-featured track.
