A London jury has reached a verdict in Russell Brand’s four-week criminal trial. At Southwark Crown Court on Thursday (November 5), jurors found the 51-year-old comedian and actor guilty of one count of rape and three counts of sexual assault. They found him not guilty of two additional rape counts. In addition, one count of attempted indecent assault. Meaning the case ended in convictions on four of the seven charges he faced.
The jury deliberated for eight and a half hours, according to the BBC. The convicted charges concern four women and offenses committed between 2004 and 2009. The UK Crown Prosecution Service said Brand was found guilty of raping a fan he met after a 2009 stand-up show at the Hammersmith Apollo. The three sexual-assault convictions concerned an MTV worker at a Soho bar in 2004, a radio worker in 2004 or 2005 and a Channel 4 worker in 2009.
Russell Brand Is Remanded Ahead Of Monday’s Sentencing
Brand denied all seven charges and maintained throughout the trial that his sexual encounters were consensual. His defense argued that although he had an extensive sexual history, none of it was unlawful, the BBC reported. The jury acquitted him of raping a woman he met at a 1999 cabaret show on the sidelines of the Labour Party conference. In addition, they acquitted him of an attempted indecent assault involving an MTV worker in 2001. He was also acquitted of a second rape allegation involving the MTV worker he was convicted of sexually assaulting in 2004.
Mr Justice Bennathan refused bail and ordered Brand to remain in custody until sentencing on Monday, November 9. The judge told him to expect a significant custodial term. HNHH first covered the allegations reported in 2023 and later the criminal charges announced in 2025. Separately, the Metropolitan Police said investigations into rape allegations made by two other women remain ongoing. No new charges have been announced in connection with those reports.
