AZ Chike is trying to take full advantage of his opportunity.

AZ Chike is weighing in on the spotlight Kendrick Lamar gave Los Angeles artists on GNX. In a clip circulating online, Chike says some of the L.A. artists who received that major look did not take full advantage of the opportunity. The comment has a little extra weight coming from someone who was in the same position. Chike appeared on “peekaboo,” one of the album’s most recognizable tracks, and has since used that attention to introduce more listeners to his own music.

"Unfortunately, for a lot of n****s, it was game over, but for Chizzle, it was game time," he said.

GNX made room for a wide group of L.A. rappers including Chike, Wallie the Sensei, Hitta J3, Dody6, YoungThreat and Peysoh. For many listeners outside the region, the album was their first real introduction to those artists. That kind of exposure can move fast. A guest verse can spark new attention, but it does not automatically create a long career. Artists still have to follow up with songs, performances and projects that give new fans a reason to stick around.

Chike’s own next chapter has been tied to that follow-through. He released No Rest For The Wicked in September, his first album since GNX, with appearances from Tyler, The Creator and JMSN and production from Pharrell Williams, Terrace Martin and Hit-Boy. The album gave him a chance to show more than the quick impression of a feature verse.

AZ Chike Speaks On Being An Artist On 'GNX'

He also addresses the pressure attached to being one of the artists people remember from GNX. On “Uncomfortable Conversations,” Chike reflects on the expectations that followed his appearance and pushes back on the idea that he has already peaked. His point in the new clip seems less about denying Kendrick’s impact than recognizing that a co-sign only opens the door.

There is a difference between saying some people did not capitalize on a moment and accusing any one person of wasting it. His own rollout gives the conversation some insight. GNX created a rare opening for L.A. artists, but each one has to decide what to build from it. Chike is clearly trying to make his opportunity last beyond one album feature.
