This weekend’s VMAs saw Cardi B and Kehlani take the edge on the competition in the Best Hip-Hop category. As celebrities gathered at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, California, hip-hop fans were largely waiting to see who would take the crown in the Best Hip-Hop category. Cardi B’s “Safe” ft. Kehlani beat out the competition, which included massive records like Don Toliver’s “E85,” Drake’s “Janice STFU,” Megan Thee Stallion’s “LOVER GIRL,” Travis Scott’s “DUMBO,” and Tyler, The Creator’s “SUGAR ON MY TONGUE.”
Unfortunately, there weren’t many other big winners in hip-hop this year. Taylor Swift and Madonna set new records during this year’s ceremony. Madonna won seven awards last night, making the most wins of any artist that night. It also brought the number of VMAs to her name to 26 in total, only behind Beyoncé and Taylor Swift. She also set the record after opening the show for the fifth time in her career.

Speaking of Taylor, she also had a hell of a night. On top of scoring two wins for Video Of The Year and Best Direction, she was awarded the MTV VMA Artist Director Honors. She also debuted her new self-directed video for “Patient Zero,” starring Dakota Johnson and Colin Farrell. The Video Of The Year win is a major milestone as it now marks her sixth victory in the category. Per Billboard, that’s three times more than Beyoncé, Kendrick Lamar, Eminem, Missy Elliott, and Rihanna, who’ve all won the award twice.
The award show was hosted by Snoop Dogg and aired live from Los Angeles on September 27th on CBS, MTV, and Paramount+. It will also be available globally starting today (September 28th).
