To put it mildly, Gucci Mane has a whole lot going on. His single “I Get The Bag,” featuring an assist from Migos, has entered the Top 10 on the Billboard’s Hip-Hop & R&B chart and his latest number, “Curve,” is gaining steam with listeners as well, thanks in no small part to the vocal stylings of The Weeknd. He’s about to tie the knot with girlfriend Keyshia Ka’oir, with their lavish wedding poised to become the subject of a new reality TV event that will air on the BET network. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, he’s got a new autobiography that hits stores today. The co-author has already spoken about the process of helping Gucci get his thoughts down on paper, but it was the rapper himself who dropped by The Daily Show to share some memorable stories from the new memoir with Trevor Noah. Among them was the tale of how he fell asleep during the filming of a sex scene for the movie Spring Breakers.
When Noah asked how that sort of lapse in energy could possibly come to be, especially when working on a sequence with subject matter that provocative, Gucci had a simple answer: “I was high as hell.” After getting a big laugh from the audience on that one, Guwop got serious for a second and detailed why he felt the need to write a book in the first place. “I feel like a lot of artists, when they die, their books come out,” Gucci explained. “I wanna tell my story while I’m here. I wanna be able to reap the benefits from it and, at the same time, I feel like it can inspire somebody.” Coming up in a world where his outlook as a child often seemed bleak, the Trap God has overcome the odds and is now one of the most sought-after features in music. He’s contributed verses to songs by Desiigner, Selena Gomez, Fifth Harmony and others so far in 2017. Musically, he’s also not slowing his pace anytime soon – his forthcoming album, Mr. Davis, drops in October.
