Just yesterday, another shooting occurred in an American public school; however, this time authorities are concluding that the incident was accidental. Shortly after classes commenced at Sal Castro Middle School in Los Angeles's Westlake neighbourhood, gunfire erupted in one of the classes, which resulted in the injury of some classmates and a faculty member.
After police began to patrol the premises and investigate the evidence, they have come to a conclusion that the shooting was largely unintentional, and was not meant to cause harm to any classmates or faculty. The LAPD have released a statement saying "at this time, the information suggests that this was an isolated incident, involving the negligent discharge of a firearm, where innocent children and a staff member were unfortunately injured."
After the incident occurred, one student echoed what the police have been able to piece together. "Someone decided to bring a gun, I guess someone was accidentally playing around with it," admits Benjamin (who's real name is hidden at the request of his guardians), a seventh-grader attending the Sal Castro Middle School. The 12 year-old alleges that the person at fault for the debacle did not know the rifle wasn't fake.
When authorities arrived on the scene, they had found a boy with a gunshot wound to the head, a girl with trauma to her wrist, and several others with minor injuries. The aforementioned boy is in stable condition and is expected to fully recover.
The suspected shooter, who is identified as a young girl, was handcuffed and sent to Los Angeles County's Juvenile Hall. Authorities are still trying to determine the motive behind the act.
