Fighting professionally since 2012, Errol Spence Jr. is one of the truly elite active boxers. 28-0 in his career, he has been amassing a number of title belts over the last six years. His first belt came in 2017 when he defeated Kell Brook for the IBF title. In 2019, he took down Shawn Porter to claim the WBC title too. Most recently, he delivered a TKO to take the WBA (Super) belt from Yordenis Ugás in 2022.
While not as belt-laden, Terence Crawford has also established himself as one of the welterweight division's greatest fighters. At 39-0, Crawford has spent the last 15 years in the ring. Having won multiple titles at lightweight and light welterweight, Crawford transitioned to welterweight in 2018. Taking down Jeff Horn, Crawford claimed the WBO welterweight title and has since defended it six times.
Crawford Versus Spence Jr For Undisputed Title
It was only a matter of time before Crawford and Spence Jr. would find their way into the same ring. According to ESPN, sources have confirmed that their showdown will finally take place this July at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The fight will be for the undisputed welterweight title, with a bidirectional rematch clause that the loser can trigger within 30 days of the fight. As a rematch will be likely, a trilogy can be expected if the two men split the first two fights.
This is the culmination of years of work. In reality, it felt as though the two men were waiting for the undisputed title to be on the line before pulling the trigger on a fight. But this means much more than just the undisputed welterweight title. The winner of the trilogy will have the leverage to push for a shot at Jernell Charlo, the undisputed junior middleweight champion. Furthermore, this fight will be the biggest in the sport since Mayweather-Pacquiao in 2017. While it is yet to be officially announced, be sure to mark off July 29 on your calendar for one hell of a fight.
