During the debate over XXL Freshman snubs, Famous Dex's name was frequently thrown into the mix as a notable absence. After the publication neglected to include him in the 2017 class, Dexter broadcasted a live session in which he tearfully implored his fans to stop hating on XXL, before vowing to come back even stronger for the 2018 class. Well, it appears there was a bit of a method to the madness, as it were. XXL editor-in-chief Vanessa Satten confirmed that Famous Dex' omission was partially motivated by an older video of the rapper beating his then-girlfriend. When Charlamage bluntly asks if that was main reason he wasn't selected, Satten shrugs, and says "I guess if you want to put it that way."

She goes on to describe that the main difference between Dex and XXXTENTACION was the fact that the former's transgressions were captured on camera, whereas the latter was never found guilty. "We saw it," says Satten. "I think the thing with X is also he’s the People’s Champ and hasn’t been found guilty of anything. You kind of have to let that play out. That’s who the people wanted."

As for Dexter, well, it would appear that he has a hurdle to climb with the publication. Still, with his newfound determination, perhaps he'll be able to come through for the 2018 edition.
