The tragic shooting of Stephon Clark, the 22-year-old unarmed black man who was shot 20 times in his Grandmother's back yard, has already sparked a massive response of protests in Sacramento and beyond. And now Compton rapper The Game has taken to Instagram in a quiet show of support in the fight for justice.
The photo depicts a teenage attendant of the recent #MarchForOurLives rally, the country-wide protest demanding stricter gun control policies. Her sign reads: "Stephon Clark was shot 20 times by Sacramento Police because his cell phone was 'mistaken' for a gun. Nikolas Cruz shot 33 children killing 17 in Parkland Florida, but got to walk out of the school in police custody. See the problem?! IT'S QWHITE OBVIOUS!" The Game captioned this picture with a simple "Stay Woke #JusticeForStephonClark".
Police killings of unarmed black Americans has been a serious issue for decades, but the killings of Trayvon Martin in 2012 and Michael Brown in 2014 have sparked a nation-wide protest movement known as #BlackLivesMatter, who have been fighting for police reforms and the end to white supremacy.
The protests and the march that have followed the Stoneman Douglas High School shooting have been inspiring and instrumental in pushing for stricter gun control measures. This sign that The Game has posted on Instagram does bring up a complicated issue in regards to gun control. Namely, that restricting guns on the street will do nothing to stop the police killings of black citizens unless the police are disarmed as well.
