This Monday, Action Bronson dropped his madcap, adventurous debut album Mr. Wonderful. Although it was a little less sample-driven than his prior mixtapes, its live instrumentation was still often based around skeletons of existing songs taken from far-flung genres, as is Bam Bam's habit.  We've already covered "Easy Rider," "Actin Crazy," "Terry" and "Baby Blue" in previous editions of Samples Of The Week, so this time we're putting some of the deeper cuts under the source-material lens. Let us know your favorite tracks in the comments section.

Action Bronson’s new album is a bid to be considered the funniest man in hip hop. A week after Kendrick Lamar’s album has the entire culture debating race, politics, and society, Mr. Wonderful reminds us that sometimes rap can also be about wicked-funny punch lines and ridiculous one-liners as much as it can attempt to impact culture itself. It’s that joke your friend makes to lighten the mood while your other two buddies are about to come to fisticuffs.

Action Bronson's Mr. Wonderful was much heavier on the promo side than its same-day release partner I Don't Like Shit, I Don't Go Outside, but despite that, the two are neck-in-neck when it comes to sales.

As a former gourmet chef of Albanian and Jewish descent who raps over a Tracy Chapman guitar riff at most of his shows, Action Bronson has always been a unique presence in hip-hop. Never has this been more pronounced, though, than at last week’s South By Southwest festival in Austin, Texas. Despite the chaos that goes along with an estimated 2,300 rappers, bands and artists converging in a city with less than 900,000 residents, SXSW isn’t quite the free-for-all, indie-championing event that it advertises itself as.

The cover to Action Bronson's new album, Mr. Wonderful, shows an illustration of Bronson spread-eagle perched atop a golden staircase. It's inspired by a scene from the 1988 American kung-fu film Bloodsport, in which the main character sits in the same pose overlooking Hong Kong as he prepares for battle. Indeed, much of Mr. Wonderful is inspired by cinema.

After a slew of highly successful mixtapes, Mr. Wonderful is Bronson's first album on a major label, Vice Records via Atlantic. The release was preceded by three singles, "Easy Rider", "Actin Crazy", and "Terry", and we also heard a leak of "Baby Blue", featuring Chance the Rapper.

Every March, the relatively small city of Austin, Texas bursts at the seams for a few weeks to host South by Southwest (SXSW), a music, arts and film festival put on in venues around the downtown. Thousands of artists and industry folk alike make the trek down south, and so the festival's schedule is a jam-packed, often chaotic affair. As the music kicks off in just a little over a week, we're breaking down the ten most promising showcases that have been announced thus far, including two we're sponsoring.

After getting two big albums, Big Sean's Dark Sky Paradise and Chris Brown & Tyga's Fan Of A Fan: The Album, last week, this week has been all about the singles. Everyone from Ludacris to Juicy J to Wale seemed to drop off a new track, and so this edition of Samples Of The Week focuses on three of the best we've heard recently.

Here it is, the once-weekly look at the tracks toward the top of our charts that you need to know about. Keep in mind that these tracks are culled from the very top of our Top 100 and, by their very nature, lean toward more ppopular artists. With an unexpectedly sample-heavy release from Drake blowing up your newsfeeds all week, we have a wealth of tracks to pick from for Samples Of The Week. We could've easily devoted this entire thing to If You're Reading This It's Too Late, but we thought we'd spare you another feature article on Drake. Still, one or two songs from the tape are included on here.

After tweeting the tracklist for his highly anticipated Mr. Wonderful, Action Bronson just got on Instagram to share the artwork for the project. The CD cover shows a shirtless Bronson perched atop some golden steps, addressing a crowd we can't see, with "Sincerely, Mr. Wonderful" signed in cursive above him. It's designed by FRKO, who did the totally crazy cover art (which shows Bronson riding a laser-headed, missile-firing shark through space) for "Actin Crazy," the second single off Mr. Wonderful.

After devoting a few of the most recent editions of "Samples Of The Week" to break down sample-heavy albums by J. Cole, Lupe Fiasco. Joey Bada$$ and Fabolous, we return to the usual format this week. That means it's back to covering three big tracks that dropped this week, and this time around, they're taken from all corners of the hip-hop spectrum. First, Action Bronson paired up with The Alchemist for a dusty gem, then Cannibal Ox returned with DOOM in tow for one of their space-age anthems, and the last track on the list... well, you know what the biggest song of the week was.

140 Bars Or Less: Tweets Of The Week (January 16)

Nothing too new is going on in the game this past week. In other words, hip-hop is just going right now. And that's not bad: Vince Staples is alive and still hating on Chris Paul, Jay Z still knows how to tweet, Meek Mill is still free and he's #woke. Common and John Legend won the Golden Globe for Best Original Song ("Glory" from Selma), but other than that, things have been a 40 degree day. The tweets are still fire though.

When hip-hop began, samples were all that DJs and producers had to construct instrumental tracks with. They'd dig through crates of vinyl trying to find isolated drum breaks, melodies or vocals that they could repurpose for use in hip-hop music. Today, sampling has become less common, but a choice sample can still push a track from lukewarm to hot faster than you can say "uh-huh honey".
