The head of UFC is scrambling to fill the void.

UFC is expected to announce this evening that there will be an interim welterweight title fight featuring Rafael dos Anjos and Colby Covington. According to Dana White, the head of the mixed martial arts organization, the reigning welterweight champ Tyron Woodley will not be able to participate within the upcoming match, as he has sustained an injury that has effectively put him out of commission until sometime in August.

Woodley has gone on record to say he thinks he would be able to recover by July, but White seems to disagree. Taking to UFC Tonight, the current president notes how "Tyron Woodley, we were trying to get him to fight, he came back with a doctor’s note that says he is injured and he cannot fight until August."

The current reigning champ's August delay would mean that Woodley's welterweight title would have remained inactive for over a year, as he last won that distinction in July of 2017.

UFC will still move on with their next championship spectacle in May, which will see Covington and dos Anjos duke it out for the esteemed prize.
