Philadelphia 76ers co-owner, Michael Rubin, wrote a letter to the judge who recently sentenced Meek Mill to two-to-four years in prison for violating his probation. In the letter, obtained by Sports Illustrated's The Crossover, Rubin explains to judge Genece E. Brinkley that Meek is a "good son, a good father, and a loyal friend."
In Rubin's plea for leniency, he detailed Meek Mill's person growth, community outreach and called him one of his closest friends. Just a few weeks ago, Meek Mill invited 35 kids from the Boys & Girls Club to attend a Sixers game, which included a meet and greet with Joel Embiid after the game.
In the lengthy letter, which was delivered to the judge prior to the sentencing, Sixers co-owner Michael Rubin writes,
“He knows that he is at a pivotal point in his career and that the stakes are high,” Rubin wrote. “I want you to know that I am personally invested in him so that he can help others.”
“I would hate to see him incarcerated for these violations,” Rubin wrote. “I truly believe that such a sentence would destroy his future.”
“Please know that I am devoted to his future and to making sure he accomplishes the goals you set forth for him,” Rubin wrote.
Meek received the two-to-four year sentence following multiple probation violations, including popping wheelies while out in New York City, and for his involvement in a fight at a St. Louis airport earlier this year. He previously served a three to six month sentence in 2014 and was already on probation when he met Rubin during the NBA's All-Star Weekend four years ago.
A rally protesting Meek's sentencing will take place today outside of Philadelphia's Criminal Justice Center. Philadelphia Eagles defensive back, Malcolm Jenkins, and Julius Erving are among those expected to attend, according to Fox 29.
