"We promise."

Ah, yes. The age of the collaborative album is among us.

It seems as though it’s every day that we’re getting collaborations that we never even knew we wanted, with the ideas of our favorite artists hopping on a full-length effort together straying further and further away from pipe dream and inching towards very plausible reality.

The latest duo to tease theidea seems to be…Lil Yachty and Lil Pump. Both now practiced mainstays in the new age, Yachty and Pump have been on the receiving end of a very good year for the newest generation of rap stars, and will be looking to bring their forces together as illustrated in a conversation between the two.

In a Twitter post on Sunday, Lil Yachty posted a screenshot of texts exchanged between the pair as Pump tells Yachty, “We gotta do this tape,” suggesting that they either drop it in January or February of the coming year and hop on a tour soon after. Lil Boat then replies with a “Lets do it,” prompting a very appropriate “eskitet” from Pump. In the tweet, Lil Yachty pens, “First of The Year, We Promise.” Soon after, he goes on to let us know that Lil Boat 2 would still be arriving before the year is up. "Another promise, he declares."

Given both guys’ roles in the ever-growing debate of the rise of “mumble rap” and all of the other things with which hip-hop purists take issue, this project is necessary, if not for the music itself, but for the conversation it’ll naturally spark. Earlier in the year, Lil Yachty managed to drop off his debut LP, Teenage Emotions. While he managed creep into the Top 5 of the Billboard Hot 200, the project‘s critical acclaim fell flat, a strong signal of a great disconnect somewhere along the line. All the while, Lil Pump managed to follow suit with his self-title debut, hitting No. 3 on the Billboard 200 in tandem with his “Gucci Gang” single, comfortably peaking at No. 7 on the Hot 100 charts.
