Michael Bennett's Incident With Police Explained By Vegas PD

Kevin McMahill, the Undersheriff of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, held a press conference yesterday afternoon to address claims made by Seattle Seahawks defensive end Michael Bennett, who alleged officers pointed guns at him "for doing nothing more than simply being a black man in the wrong place at the wrong time."

The incident took place in the early hours of August 27th shortly after the Floyd Mayweather vs Conor McGregor fight at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. According to McMahill, police received a call around 1:30 am about a possible active shooter who was believed to be somewhere around Drai's nightclub at the Cromwell casino.

Per CBS Sports,

"As they [police officers] moved toward the nightclub, an individual later identified as Bennett was seen crouched down behind a gaming machine as the officers approached," McMahill sald. "Once Bennett was in the officer's view, he quickly ran out the south doors, jumped over a wall onto Flamingo Road East of Las Vegas Boulevard into traffic."

"Due to Bennett's actions, and the information the officer's had at the time, they believed that Bennett may have been involved in the shooting and they gave chase," McMahill said. "Bennett was placed in handcuffs and detained while officers determined whether or not he was involved in the incident."

According to Bennett's description of the events, police officers then threatened to "blow my fucking head off" if he moved. In a message posted on twitter, Bennett said he was later placed in a police car until officers confirmed his identity and released him "without any legitimate justification for the officers' abusive conduct."

During yesterday's press conference, McMahill said they're going to investigate Bennett's claim that the responding officer threatend to blow his head off. However, he said there's no evidence that race played any role.

"I can tell you as I stand here today, I see no evidence of that," McMahill said. "I see no evidence that race played any role in this incident."
