Yours Truly and adidas continue to bring to life unexpected and exciting collaborations with their Songs from Scratch series. The series often unites hip-hop and R&B artists with lesser-known producers usually hailing from the electronic world. Past installments include Fetty Wap's "Promises," produced by Bauuer and Dubbel Dutch, as well as Chance the Rapper and Tinashe's "All My Friends," produced by London duo Snakehips.

Today's Song from Scratch, "Plays," comes from Ty Dolla $ign and the Australian duo known as HWLS, made up of Kit Pop as well as Ta-Ku, who has been affiliated with the L.A. beatmaking collective Soulection.

"Plays" is a deep, stirring track that finds Ty Dolla singing passionately over a murky and melancholy instrumental. As is his forte, Ty sticks to the bedroom material, though the dramatic backdrop puts his lyrics in a different -- less superficial -- light. It's a one-off collaboration series, but we'd love to see further work between Ty and HWLS.

Quotable Lyrics

Every time I pull up
She say how she smellin' marijuana
She say she got drank and some homegirls
Yeah, you know I'm comin' over
We been making plays
