While DAMN. certainly earned its stripes as one of the year's most impressive bodies of work, the visuals that accompanied the tracks proved to be some of the most striking clips of the year, and Sunday night (August 27) they rightfully earned the credit they deserved as "HUMBLE.' took home the lauded Video of The Year award at the MTV Video Music Awards.
Alongside Dave Meyers and Dave Free, who also joined Kendrick onstage as he accpeted the award for Best Hip-Hop Video for the same visual earlier on in the night, Lamar gave his thanks to God and the crew that's help him bring together all his creative ventures since the inception of his career.
"Man, glory to God every time, giving us these amazing talents. ...I ain't nothing wihout my team, Dave Free. I've been rocking with this guy since I was fourteen years old. We always put our heads together. He's one of the greatest visionaries today in the game."
With his Video of The Year win, Kung Fu Kenny beat out competition that included Bruno Mars' "24k Magic," The Weeknd's "Reminder," and DJ Khaled's "Wild Thoughts" videos while his Best Hip-Hop Video award took the 'W' over Big Sean's "Bounce Back," DJ Khaled's "I'm The One," Migos' "Bad & Boujee," Chance the Rapper's "Same Drugs," and Lil Yachty's "Broccoli" collabration with D.R.A.M.
Nominated for eight Video Music Awards, Kendrick walked away with six wins by the end of the night, all attributed to the powerful "HUMBLE." music video.
In total, "HUMBLE." also took home the titles of Best Cinematography for Scott Cunningham's work, Best Direction, credited to Dave Meyers and Kendrick and Dave Free's video direction pseudonym The Little Homies, and Best Art Direction for the work of Spencer Graves.
In addition, the Top Dawg Entertainment imprint earned a Moon Person for "Best Visual Effects" on "HUMBLE."
Since its release back in March, "HUMBLE." has gone on to be Kendrick's second single to reach No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and his first as a lead vocalist.
Its initial debut at No. 2 made it the highest-charting debut for a Hip-Hop song since Eminem's "Love The Way You Live" collaboration with Rihanna back in 2010.
