It has clearly been a tough year for rappers when it comes to love. In 2014, we saw some very long-term relationships, marriages and short flings sadly come to an end, some of which were really unexpected.

Being in the public eye as much as some of these rappers are no doubt makes it extremely difficult to maintain normalcy in a relationship. Furthermore, the hectic careers that these artists have means very little time to dedicate to love.

As these stars move on to look for new love (and indeed, some of the rappers on this list already have moved on), or simply just a hottie on their arm for the time being, we wish them the best of luck, and for sure will continue to be interested in their chaotic love lives.

Were you surprised by any of these breakups? Let us know in the comments.

Ciara and Future

A History Of Rapper Break-Ups In 2014

It looked like singer Ciara had finally found love when Future told Vibe magazine that he was dating her in January 2013. Things moved pretty fast between the two, when in October of the same year they announced their engagement. The “Move That Dope” rapper allegedly proposed with a fifteen-carat diamond ring.

Their son, arrived in May 2014, and was given the name Future Zahir Wilburn. Overall though the relationship was very short-lived when Cici broke of their engagement in August of this year as she reportedly found out he was cheating on her whilst on tour. Nonetheless, their break-up was also short-lived, as the two reportedly got back together in September. Do you think these two will last the second time around?

Wiz Khalifa and Amber Rose

A History Of Rapper Break-Ups In 2014

Wiz Khalifa and Amber Rose were no doubt one of the most watched couples in hip hop. Rose began dating Wiz in 2011, roughly a year after her two-year relationship with Kanye West. Happily in love, they got engaged a year after that and went on to marry in July 2013. A few months before this, Amber gave birth to their child Sebastian Taylor Thomaz. Together the two were always a spectacle at awards and on the red carpet, with Rose always looking red hot and Wiz's fashion choices often standing out.

With the couple always looking so happy out in public, it came as a huge shock when last month Rose announced she would be filing for divorce due to “irreconcilable differences”. She also stated that she planned to fight for full custody over their child. Not so soon after the announcement, she was pretty candid about the reasons for their split stating she was “devastated and crushed.”

“Please stop with the fake stories. I would never ever cheat on my husband in a million years I think you guys know this….”

Since then, rumors have continued to fly around that Wiz was caught cheating with twins. Amber has continued to be very honest on Twitter about how hurt she is by the breakup.

Big Sean and Naya Rivera

A History Of Rapper Break-Ups In 2014

Big Sean and Naya Rivera called it quits earlier this year, after getting engaged rather quickly. He announced it through his rep saying:

“After careful thought and much consideration, Sean has made the difficult decision to call the wedding off…The recent rumors and accusations reported by so called or fake sources are simply untrue. Sean wishes Naya nothing but the best and it is still his hope that they can continue to work through their issues privately. We will not be commenting again on this matter"

Rumors say that Rivera was controlling and too demanding, as she took to Twitter to accuse Big Sean of stealing a Rolex from her place, which his team stated was actually his own watch in the first place. TMZ also reported that the two had been attending couples therapy and that the Glee actress constantly wanted to know where he was all the time and said things like, "If you don't listen to what I say, I'll ruin your career."

Since then both Sean and Naya have moved on. Big Sean is now dating Ariana Grande, and Rivera very recently married actor Ryan Dorsey not so long after the breakup.

Chris Brown and Karrueche Tran

A History Of Rapper Break-Ups In 2014

The on-off relationship between Chris Brown and Karrueche Tran has been an on-going saga. But the two broke up in August this year after a three-year relationship. Reasons for the split have differed according to sources.

TMZ said that Karrueche ended it after seeing Chris Breezy 'like' some fan photos on Instagram which featured him and Ri Ri. This was not the first time this year that Karrueche allegedly ended it. She was said to have also dumped him in March due to his unfaithful ways. At the same time the sources have been unclear on who was the dumper and who was the dumpee. Reports later came out saying that it was Breezy who ended it after Karrueche was allegedly texting and sending photos to other guys, and much to his disliking, also spoke about their relationship in an interview.

The breakup would be short-lived however as the two are now back together after been seen out with each other on multiple occasions, including this past Halloween.

Robin Thicke and Paula Patton

A History Of Rapper Break-Ups In 2014

The world couldn’t quite believe it when reports hit the news that the marriage of Robin Thicke and Paula Patton had come to an end. Thicke met Patton when he was only 14-years old, and the two starting dating at the age of 16. Their relationship looked solid when they decided to marry in 2005 and produced the cutest kid in the form of Julian Fuego Thicke in 2010.

After many years, their time together came to an end when they separated in February 2014. Around this time, Thicke had been rumored to be seen with numerous other women. The singer seemed clearly upset by the separation when at a concert in Virginia, he told the audience that he was actively trying to get her back:

“For y'all that don't know me and my wife separated, but I'm trying to get my girl back. She's a good woman”

Things went from bad to worse with Paula Patton officially filing for divorce this month. Things didn't look up for Thicke when he dedicated an entire album to Paula, Paula, which had a lacklustre performance.

French Montana and Khloe Kardashian

A History Of Rapper Break-Ups In 2014

One couple that surprised many of us this year was Khloe and French. It seemed that Kim K’s little sis had finally started to move on from her failed marriage with Lamar Odom when she started dating French Montana earlier this year. Their relationship was very much in limelight, something that French wasn’t use to.

“I hate being on camera… Sometimes you’re not ready for it and it’s too much pressure, but I love it. But I hate how it happened… all the commotion,” he told Access Hollywood.

Of course footage of their romance and the beginnings of their relationship were also captured on the recent season of Keeping Up With The Kardashians. Khloe also showed how sure she was about their coupling, attacking their critics when they went on radio together to be interviewed by Angie Martinez:

"They’re not fucking him, so why should they care?"

Their 8-month relationship came to end when the former Mrs Odom broke things off, allegedly due to the fact that French was also texting her BFF Malika Haqq, whilst others say that she still isn’t quite over Lamar Odom.

Yet, there could be hope for these two still, as reports have began circulating just today that the two may get back together, with Khloe telling E! that "We all miss French. We love French. I’m still friends with him. I still talk to him every day. I talked to him before I came here."

Tyga and Blac Chyna

A History Of Rapper Break-Ups In 2014

Tyga and Blac Chyna got together in 2011 after they met at a party hosted by Chris Brown. Blac Chyna soon became the leading lady in his video for his track “Rack City.” The following year, the couple tried to keep rumors of the two expecting a baby pretty quiet, until they could no longer hide it.

In October 2012, Blac Chyna gave birth to their son King Cairo. Within a short space of time, things got serious fairly quickly as on the same day of the birth of their son, Tyga indulged on $6.5 million home in Calabasas, California. Things seemed to be going well as by the end of the year, the YMCMB rapper proposed to Blac Chyna.

When speaking of their relationship, Tyga described that their habits were not the same as other couples: “We got a real gangsta relationship. Ya’ll not gonna see us doing no crazy, corny stuff. We go to the strip club together, do stuff like that,” he told Power 106 FM.

But it seemed that love failed the two, when this August Tyga chose to end their relationship. Since then, it looked as though the two might be getting back together for a brief moment in time-- all that seemed to come crashing down this past weekend, when T-Raww allegedly hacked Chyna's twitter only to call her a gold-digger and a cheater, meanwhile Kylie Jenner was posted up with Tyga on Halloween, adding fuel to the fire concerning dating rumors.

Nick Cannon and Mariah Carey

A History Of Rapper Break-Ups In 2014

Nick Cannon and Mariah Carey have always appeared happily married with their two children Moroccan and Monroe. They managed to have their wedding without the media knowing in 2008. No one suspected the two were having any problems as the couple had recently renewed their vows just a year ago. But, in May this year, it was revealed that the stars had separated and were headed towards divorce.

Since then the rumors have been rife. Nick Cannon has been accused of cheating, and has been linked with the newly single Amber Rose who is also on his roster (although both have denied such rumors). The Wild ‘n’ Out star also showed things were dead with Mariah when he covered up his “Mariah” tattoo on his back, replacing it with a crucifix. Reports have stated that Carey is taking the divorce quite badly.

A$AP Rocky and Chanel Iman

A History Of Rapper Break-Ups In 2014

Probably the most recent breakup of the year, one of rap’s most fashionable couples came to an end last month. A$AP Rocky had been dating model Chanel Iman for a year, but it seems that their hectic lives got in the way of their romance.

"They are no longer together. This happened about a few weeks ago," a source told E! News. "It was just not working out with both of their busy travel schedules."

To be fair, with A$AP Rocky’s Casanova ways, it’s pretty surprising that they came this far.

Nelly and LaShontae Heckard

A History Of Rapper Break-Ups In 2014

You may remember that for quite a long time, the Country Grammar rapper Nelly was dating Ashanti. This relationship was kept under wraps for a long time and was said to have been on and off since 2003. The two officially parted ways in December 2012. Nelly then started dating model/actress LaShontae Heckard. Their relationship ended earlier this year with some odd twists.

Whilst Nelly and LeShontae’s romance was coming to an end, the rapper was frequently seen out which his ex Ashanti, both at the Superbowl, and he was also seen Facetiming her at her album launch party. This, however, didn’t stop Nelly from naming LaShontae his #WCW on Twitter whilst she was moving on with her new man Brandon Jennings, causing them to go public with their relationship.

French Montana and Trina

A History Of Rapper Break-Ups In 2014

It’s clearly not been a good year for French in the love department. Before he started seeing Khloe Kardashian, the Coke boy was in an on-off relationship with Miami rapper Trina. French, who also has a child, is a rapper who no doubts has his fair share of baggage.

Rumors say that the two weren’t officially dating back in 2013, but she did move into his home. As French and Khloe continued to be photographed by paparazzi out in public, Trina decided that it was time to get out. Although some reports say that Trina actually introduced French to Khloe, French has denied this during a recent interview with Wendy Williams. Meanwhile, Trina's new track “Fuck Love” was supposedly written about French.

Jason Derulo and Jordin Sparks

A History Of Rapper Break-Ups In 2014

Another once-happy couple that ended their relationship in 2014 was Jason Derulo and American Idol star Jordin Sparks.

The two had been seeing each other for around three years, but Derulo admitted that he ended their relationship over the phone, telling Power 105.1 that he was out of town.

Following the break-up, Jordin took a positive approach, with one of the most heartfelt tweets you will see after a relationship ending:

'Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened'

Back to “Ridin’ Solo”, Derulo has denied that he cheated on Sparks, but in interviews, his ex-lady has refused to comment on these issues. He also candidly spoke about the fact that the break-up was not due to any problems in their sex life. Sparks continues to be gracious regarding the end of her relationship in interviews.

Nicki Minaj and Safaree Samuels

A History Of Rapper Break-Ups In 2014

Althoguh her relationship was kept under tight wraps, Nicki Minaj had been dating Safaree Samuels, her hype man/assistant/struggle rapper for a long time. Their status has never fully been confirmed however, SB was referred to as her boyfriend on the show, VH1’s: The Fabulous Life: Nicki Minaj. The two go way back, and Samuels has played the role of the man behind the scenes.

Just recently, it was announced that the Nicki had broken off the 14-year relationship between her and Safaree after he had continued to grow jealous and controlling over her success. We can only imagine that Minaj is likely to be a difficult lady to handle, but it seems that SB was growing tired of his role. They finally came to an end when her assistant didn’t show up for one of her gigs leaving her lost for a hype man, reports say.
