Following the tragic killing of 18-year-old Micheal Brown, Ferguson has been in disarray. Citizens of the town have been fighting for justice, and while their protests have generally been met with excessive force from police, the uprising has been inspiring. A few rappers have done their part to raise awareness of the situation, with both J. Cole and Nelly visiting Ferguson. Cam'ron is the most recent artist to comment on what's going on, pointing out the injustices he's seen in New York that he feels should have inspired similar uproar.
“I think it’s messed up,” said Cam of the current state of Ferguson. “A lot of times what I think is honestly, us New Yorkers when it comes to situations like that we kinda soft as a city. But it’s situations like that. Because, I mean, don’t get me wrong our police are probably like police was in the 90s in L.A. You know what I’m saying? I don’t know how they are today in L.A…The police was wild. Police are like that today in New York because everybody makes a big deal about Mike Brown and that is a reason to make a big deal, a very big deal. But it was a guy two weeks prior to Mike Brown who got choked up by the cops for just selling cigarettes. He got choked out on camera."
Cam went out to on point out yet another police killing in his city. “You got this guy Sean Bell four, five years ago gets shot nine times with no weapon,” he said. “Four police. Police get off…But the Mike Brown situation everybody in St. Louis go crazy. They wild out as they should."
The rapper made sure to stress that he does not condone violence, but feels that there needs to be more opposition to these events. "I’m not promoting the violence and acting like it should be crazy, but something gotta be done," he argued. "They taking a stand. As opposed to New York we got two people who died recently from police we don’t say nothing…I’m pissed Barack ain’t say nothing about it yet. But just in general it happens in New York a lot and we sweep it under the rug. But then we quick to jump on the Mike Brown bandwagon."
