If you've watched Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse, you likely agree that Post Malone and Swae Lee's hit "Sunflower" was a perfect fit with the film. With the radio play that the duo has gotten, it appears to have extended the reach of just being a song made for a movie soundtrack. When we're introduced to Miles Morales, we see him stumbling over the lyrics to "Sunflower," showing his personality right off the bat. However, the track wasn't always the studio's first pick to appear in the movie.
Swae Lee and Post Malone may have found past success with their collaborations but "Sunflower" wasn't always going to appear in Spider-Man. "We had this idea that if he sang a song that was out of his register, it would make the audience laugh," said writers Phil Lord and Rodney Rothman. They had a "foolproof" way of achieving this result: with Childish Gambino's "Redbone." According to Vulture, Donald Glover's popular song was actually the studio's first choice for the intro.
Unfortunately, they were no longer able to use the track after Get Out called dibs, using it in their film. "We were in big trouble when we couldn't use it anymore - we needed to replace one of the greatest songs of the year, and we had to do it in time to spend the three months we would need to animate that shot," said the writers. They ended up coming through with Post Malone and Swae Lee's collaboration, which hits as effectively as Childish Gambino would have.
