Star Trek Fans will soon be able to enjoy the franchise in an innovative and extraordinary new way. CBS All-Access has reportedly commissioned a half hour long animated comedy series titled Star Trek: Lower Decks. The series is expected to chronicle the everyday lives of  "the support crew serving on one of Starfleet’s least important ships," and will feature the work of Emmy award-winning Rick and Morty writer, Mike McMahan.

McMahan, a self-professed "life-long Trekkie," shared his excitement about the new project with Entertainment Weekly. "It’s a surreal and wonderful dream come true to be a part of this new era of Star Trek," he said. "While Star Trek: Lower Decks is a half-hour, animated show at its core, it's undeniably Trek — and I promise not to add an episode at the very end that reveals the whole thing took place in a training program," he continued. McMahan's supporters will recall that back in 2011, McMahan wrote and published fictitious plots based on Star Trek: The Next Generation on Twitter. His tweets gained him immense notoriety and lead to a publishing deal that resulted in Warped: An Engaging Guide to the Never-Aired 8th Season, one of McMahan's first books.

Given his background and evident passion for the project, it seems McMahan is the ideal person for the job. What are your thoughts?
