Billie Eilish explains why she released the song.

Billie Eilish is one of the quickest rising talents in the music industry, achieving tremendous success after only a few years in the game. The teenager recently released her song "Wish You Were Gay," which received some online backlash, as you probably could have anticipated. Billie's grungy aesthetic seemed not to attract her crush, so she wrote a song about it and said that she wished he was gay. In her mind, that was more healthy for her to believe instead of just accepting the fact that he wasn't into her.

The pop star has been accused of "queer-baiting" with the song. In a new interview with PopBuzz, she says that the title and content of the track were misinterpreted. "First off I want to be so clear that it’s so not supposed to be an insult," says the singer. "I feel like it’s been a little bit misinterpreted. I tried so hard to not make it in any way offensive."

She further explains, "The whole idea of the song is, it’s kind of a joke. It’s kind of like, ‘I’m an ass and you don’t love me.’ And you don’t love me because you don’t love me and that’s the only reason and I wish you didn’t love me because you didn’t love girls." According to NME, the boy actually did end up coming out as gay, revealing his sexuality to Billie after her advances. "He just came out to me like a couple weeks ago," she revealed. "So I wrote the song and made him fuck a dude. I’m fucking proud, bro!"
