According to ESPN, the Houston Rockets have re-engaged in trade talks with the Minnesota Timberwolves over Jimmy Butler. They have reportedly offered the Timberwolves' brass a package that includes four 1st round draft picks. The Houston Rockets are reportedly willing to mortgage future assets and short-term cap flexibility in order to capitalize on a perceived three-year Championship window.
Houston's offer of four first rounders constitutes the maximum allowed within a 7-year timeframe. Per the CBA, first rounders cannot be bundled together in consecutive years, and no further than 7 seasons down the line, like an ABAB rhyme scheme. Lottery protection would likely factor in the deal, depending on mitigating factors (player add-ons).
The closest the Timberwolves have come to dealing Butler was in a trade with Miami. The proposed deal hinged on the inclusion of Josh Richardson and a single first rounder. Thibodeau pulled out in the eleventh hour. The Wolves hope they can offload Gorgui Dieng's $48 million contract in a commuted deal involving Jimmy Butler, in which case one of the "proposed" first round picks would be rescinded.
Butler is averaging 24.8 points, 5.3 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 3.8 steals to start the season. The Rockets would be inclined to pitch him a max contract offer at season's end if all goes according to plan.
