Solange opened up about the life-changing event that placed her on the path to stardom as a recording artist. The songstress says she had grown up thinking of a successful career in dance, a plan that was thwarted by a major injury. After tearing her meniscus at the age of 15, Solange found refuge in the studio as an observer.
During one of American Express OPEN Success Makers' panels, the "Cranes in the Sky" singer admits to having been extremely blessed despite her initial heartbreak.
“I would go to any studio session that anyone would let me sit in, and I would watch and I would study. I was extremely lucky and privileged that I had that kind of access, but I think about these landmarks —how this devastating thing turned into the thing that I actually do now, which turned into what I’m actually doing presently, which is incorporating my mess into my work and how any one of those moments I could have just completely surrendered.”

Solange claimed to have initially thought of limiting her talents to songwriting.
“You know, I never thought that I actually had such a great voice. I thought that I was a really strong songwriter, I thought I had a really strong vision, but I just did not believe in my voice enough yet, so I worked really hard the art of developing a song.”
