J. Cole's been a polarizing figure among some of the new generation of rappers. Lil Pump and Smokepurpp rode the wave of their long-running "Fuck J. Cole" joke. Cole addressed the youngins on his track, "1985" which was seemingly a shot at artists like Lil Pump. Pump said that the two are on "good terms" during his appearance at the BBMA's so the tension has clearly died. However, one of Pump's peers, Trippie Redd, has nothing but praise for J. Cole and referred to him as one of the GOATs.
Trippie Redd recently spoke to Montreality and spoke on his appreciation for J. Cole. The "Dark Knight Gummo" rapper said that he grew up listening to Cole's music and that he knew he was one of the GOATs when he first heard him.
"I grew up listening to J. Cole," he said. "I just knew when he first came out, [he's] one of the GOATs. He's hard, regardless of what you think. He is a rapper. He gives you nothing but bars and lyrical play, which is amazing. His lyrical play is distinct. He'll say some real shit and he'll play around with it and give you the real shit the whole time."
He further explained artists like J. Cole and Kanye West get more spins from him in comparison to some of his peers.
"I really appreciate him and fuck with his music, because he's doing something for the culture that a lot of people aren't really doing," he said about Cole in comparison to the new wave of rappers. "I want to hear bars sometimes. I don't just listen to y'all n*ggas. I play y'all song like three songs like that and the rest of the time I'm playing rock music. J Cole, mothafuckin' Kanye."
