The death of Stephon Clark, who was unarmed when he was shot 20 times by a Sacramento police officer, is reigniting the national conversation surrounding targeted police brutality and gun violence. Many have taken to the streets to protest this latest instance of systemic discrimination, and are pleading to the White House to help put an end to such an epidemic.
During a standard press briefing yesterday, Sarah Huckabee Sanders addressed this societal concern. She referred to these scenarios as "something that is a local matter and that’s something that we feel should be left up to the local authorities at this point in time." The conversation also included a reference to the lax criminal charges pinned against the Louisiana officer who shot Alton Brown two years ago.
Sanders does admit that the Clark case is a "terrible incident," but was quick to reaffirm president Donald Trump's support of local police officers around the country. "We want to make sure that all law enforcement is carrying out the letter of the law," she revealed.
The Congressional Black Caucus took to Twitter to denounce Sanders' assertions, emphasizing the deeply-embedded racism still practiced throughout America.
