The upcoming film seriously upgrades its 1987 source material.

A red band trailer for The Predator has been released, and it paints a particularly grim portrait of invasion and destruction. The film will be the fourth instalment in the series, and will feature creatures who have "genetically upgraded themselves with DNA from other species." The preview clip sees an arsenal of hunters trying to thwart their violent tirade.

The project counts Shane Black as its director, who is responsible for Iron Man 3. It has been eight years since the last Predator film was released, but star Keegan-Michael Key assures the general public that the upcoming tale of extraterrestrial horror is "not a sequel."

The film effectively takes place between the 1990 film Predator 2 and 2010's Predators. "[It has] lots of elements of humor," Key reveals. "It certainly lives in the universe of the five films that were made. I think that's probably the best way to say it and the only way I can say it right now."

The Predator also stars Olivia Munn, Jacob Tremblay, Jake Busey, Sterling K. Brown, Boyd Holbrook and Trevante Rhodes; it will hit theatres on September 14th.
