We may have to put the whole Oprah 2020 campaign to bed or at least mitigate our strong feelings on the issue. In an interview with 60 minutes, Oprah politely declined the calls for her candidacy.
She is however honored to be considered a viable candidate by the general public:
“I am actually humbled by the fact that people think that I could be a leader of the free world, but it’s just not in my spirit,”
Oprah had initially refuted these rumors in conversation with Lin-Manuel Miranda but people have been reluctant to mark that down as an official statement. We continue to cover this story, in part, due to the daily low points being administered by the oval office.
Oprah's outgoing personality and high-powered friends may give her a paper thin profile as a candidate without political experience. It was her speech at the Golden Globes that implanted the idea in people's minds. Oprah admits that she takes her responsibility as a public figure very seriously. "If I were considering a run I would take myself out of the role of Journalist or Conversationalist"
For now, we must take her word on merit.
