Hitmaka, the producer once known as Yung Berg, has been behind some of the best R&B of 2018 thus far, and he's just getting started. Working with Ty Dolla $ign across the gorgeous Beach House 3 deluxe edition and sculpting Jeremih's The Chocolate Box EP, Hitmaka is bringing bright textures back to R&B as many of genre's biggest artists continue to go darker. That much is also true on L.A. singer Goldiie's new single "Tonight," which succeeds with stacked harmonies, lush chord progressions, and most importantly, a strong topline. It's a perfect summer R&B gem with a timeless quality, but with just enough gloss to feel unmistakeably contemporary. In that way, it has a similar appeal to "Boo'd Up," which may be the signal of a sea change in R&B to come.
Meanwhile, Hitmaka is busy working on Ty Dolla $ign and Jeremih's joint album MihTy, as well as Tinashe's defiant new Nashe material.
